ECTS - European Credit Transfer System

ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System , was developed by the Commission of the European Communities in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad. It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. ECTS is based on the principle of mutual trust and confidence between the participating higher education institutions. In 1998 Hedmark University College’s Faculty of Education was allocated EU funding to develop ECTS information in catalogue form for its own faculty. Hedmark University College decided to work out ECTS information packages for all faculties and allocated funds for this project which was completed after a project-period of two years. The Hedmark University College information package gives a comprehensive picture of the institution, but it does not necessarily provide complete details about the faculties and members of staff and all course programmes. |

The ECTS system is reinforced by the following: 1. ECTS Credits Credits are allocated to course units to describe the student workload required to complete the programme. They reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full year of academic work at an institution, to include lectures, practical work, seminars, individual work and examinations and other forms of appraisal and assessment. The ECTS credits express a relative value. 60 ECTS credits represent the full workload of an academic year, and 30 ECTS credits a semester. The Norwegian National System of credit allocation is well adapted to transference into ECTS credits. One Norwegian «vekttall» (credit point) is reckoned to be the equivalent of 3 ECTS credits. From Autumn 2003 the term “vekttall” was replaced with the term “studiepoeng”. One year’s study will give a total of 60 studiepoeng, which equals 60 ECTS-credits. 2. ECTS Grading Scale The scale is a mechanism to convert grades from one grading system to another without replacing local grading systems. In other words the scale provides a common denominator for giving an assessment of student achievement. The ECTS grading scale is not meant to replace the Hedmark University College grading system. However, from Autumn 2003 number grades were replaced by letter grades as in ECTS. 3. Information package This information package covers details of Hedmark University College, the faculties and members of staff, the organisation and structure of programmes and courses. 4. Learning Agreement The agreement between Hedmark University College, the partner institution and the individual student covers the intended study programme to be undertaken and the ECTS credits awarded. 5. Transcript of records The transcript provides an easily understood way of indicating individual learning achievements to be transferred from Hedmark University College to other institutions of higher education. |
