Last week Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) president Loren J. Anderson and wife, accompanied by former ambassador to USA, Tom Wraalsen visited Hedmark University College (HUC).
Impressed
The visit was a part of their official visit to Norway partners and PLU alumni. They were welcomed at Terningen Arena by rector Lise Kulbrandstad and dean Trygve Hermansen and had first a show around on campus. They seemed impressed and inspired by seeing such a huge investment in higher education and “Public Health” fronted by HUC and partners in the municipality of Elverum, the region of Hedmark add private entrepreneurs.
Long time partnership
PLU and HUC have been partner institutions for more than 10 years, and the institutional cooperation has throughout the years been valuable and strategic particularly in the international profiling of the two institutions. Together with University of Namibia (UNAM) they have formed a tripartite consortium formalised through wide agreements of cooperation regarding student mobility, staff mobility, joint education initiatives and research. The tree partners have developed a joint international semester programme in social sciences: “Challenges of Contemporary Society”, now operated at HUC campus Elverum, Terningen.
For the fall semester programme 2011 there are 6 students from PLU and 4 from UNAM attending. The guests from PLU got a presentation of the course by associate professor Inger Haug and the students, and there was a dialogue on experiences and learning outcomes including multicultural learning.
Nordic alumni in Oslo
President Anderson had invited staff and students from HUC to the formal PLU Nordic Alumni 20 year celebration in Oslo later the same week, and HUC were represented by several previous students and staff. For the HUC international office this was itself a learning experience on how also Norwegian governmental funded institutions in the future are challenged to plan and act more strategically with previous students for the labelling of your institution, cooperation with the labour market and general improvement of student quality.
